Details are noted below:

February 2005

The Command PR Committee is working with Fenety Marketing to produce a history book that includes the histories of our Legion Branches in BC and the Yukon.

Fenety Marketing will be approaching members of the public to support this project. Legion members are not being asked to contribute to the project.

For those of you who contribute to this worthwhile project – a “Big Thank You” for your pledge in support of BC/Yukon Command, The Royal Canadian Legion’s, “Commemorative History Book Project.” Your contribution will assist our Command in its continuing efforts to assist veterans and their dependents; enable us to carry on with our Educational Assistance programs; Youth Sports programs and our commitment to community projects as a whole, as well as our ongoing efforts in the promotion and perpetuation of “remembrance.”

As an example of the many projects which The Royal Canadian Legion is actively involved in through our Command, and our 156 Branches and 114 Ladies Auxiliaries in British Columbia and the Yukon, the following statistics show where our focus lies:

· Over one million dollars from poppy funds to ex-service personnel and their dependents in need and for other authorized purposes
· Half a million dollars raised by the 5,000 Ladies Auxiliary members for charities and deserving branch projects
· Provide a service bureau for all veterans, ex-service personnel and peacekeepers to assist with pension applications and benefits concerns
· One million dollars paid annually in property taxes throughout BC and the Yukon
· Since 1956 sponsored senior citizens in low rental housing with a construction cost of over $68,000,000 and a current value many times that amount
· Donate special equipment and furnishings to hospitals and extras, from television sets to buses
· Branch and Ladies Auxiliary members spend time visiting veterans in hospital
· Over $250,000 in bursaries awarded at branch level
· Over $350,000 on youth programs, sponsoring a variety of sports teams
· Sponsor over 5,000 Cubs, Scouts, Guides and Cadets
· $16,500 annually to send young BC athletes and coaches to a Legion-sponsored national athletic camp and to fund local events
· $60,000 annually to the department of family practice at UBC. Over 200 family doctors have graduated since inception in 1978. Most of these are in practice in BC, including a large number in rural areas

The “Commemorative History Book Project” is being undertaken to provide a history of The Royal Canadian Legion in British Columbia and the Yukon and inform all of the many commitments, past and present, of BC/Yukon Command.

A copy of this publication will be supplied to all provincial and school libraries in British Columbia and the Yukon to be used as an educational tool for our youth.

Again, we thank you for your sponsorship and support of this very worthwhile project.

Sincerely,

J.G. “Bud” Alcorn
