The
number one priority of The Royal Canadian Legion has been
to assist our veterans and their families. This remains
the priority of the Legion.
When
we speak of veterans this includes any person who is serving
or who has been honourably released from the Armed Forces
of Canada, the Commonwealth or its wartime allies; or who
has served in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during
wartime.
WE
ARE THERE FOR ALL VETERANS!
It
is important that our serving servicemen and servicewomen
and their families whether they are in the Regular force
or the Militia know that The Royal Canadian Legion is there
for them.
We are here to help all of you.
There
are many ways that we can and do help our servicemen and
servicewomen and their families: Here are just a few of
the initiatives that BC/Yukon Command of The Royal Canadian
Legion does to help.
·
Provide access to professionally trained Service Officers
for all Regular and Reserve Force personnel and their families.
We have Terry Mills, Command Service Officer stationed at
CFB Esquimalt who also makes frequent trips to CFB Comox.
In Vancouver (at Command office) we have Command Service
Officer Judy Richards to assist. In addition, any branch
Service Officer throughout our Command will assist if called
upon. All assistance given is strictly confidential.
.
· We assist the Military Family Resource Centres
throughout our Command by providing assistance at all of
our branches to our serving personnel’s families when
they are on deployment. Again, this is through our Service
Officers and again all contact is strictly confidential.
·
Through the Legion Foundation we provide Spinoza Bears to
the Military Family Resource Centres. These are therapeutic
talking bears specifically designed to assist children under
stress or suffering with serious illness.
·
We are currently sponsoring Dr. Westwood who has initiated
a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder clinic at UBC assisting
veterans and serving personnel alike. Any serving members
who want this assistance are to contact our Service Officers
who will make arrangements again, in the strictest of confidence.
·
Currently we are attempting to sponsor a similar clinic
at the University of Victoria.
·
This Committee proposes to provide the Legion Magazine to
the appropriate messes in all Regular and Reserve force
ships, bases and regiments in the BC/Yukon Command.
·
We are constantly lobbying our Federal Government through
our Federal Ministers and Members of Parliament for better
conditions and equipment for our Armed Forces. We are very
successful in this regard and today’s military is
benefiting from our efforts.
·
We also are constantly pushing for better benefits for today’s
veterans through Veterans Affairs Canada.
·
If our Military Services and Association committee is made
aware of a problem in the military we will make every effort
at our disposal to solve it for our servicemen and servicewomen.
The
Royal Canadian Legion has 156 Branches in BC/Yukon Command
and approximately 75,000 members. If you or your family needs
help, one of our branches is sure to be close by.
We
would certainly like to welcome you to join our organization
but please remember: We are there for you and your family
whether you are a member of our organization or not!
