Our
Past President Comrade Bill Higdon came up with the idea that
we should do something on Mothers Day to benefit a local charity,
and so the following events got underway.
First of all President Al Rusk contacted The Chilliwack Hospice
Society and we set about getting donations from local businesses
for food items so that we could put on a Mothers Day Brunch
from 10am until 2pm.
Not content with that, Bill then said “why not make a
day of it, I’ll volunteer to get my head shaved for donations”,
and so it began…..
Well, we ended up by cooking 153 breakfasts at $5.00 a plate
with the entire proceeds going to the Hospice and that figure
being matched by the branch. Our Ladies Auxiliary dressed the
tables beautifully with tablecloths and fresh flowers on each
table, plus they made up a basket and raffled it off collecting
over $400 for the Hospice.
We had three ladies, one from the R.C.M.P. dispatch office,
a member, and a friend of a member all get there heads shaved,
along with six male members, one of which is an R.C.M.P. member
as well – he actually came into the branch to get a pledge
sheet and I got him to sign up for membership too!
After the head shaving, which began shortly after 2pm, we had
music and dancing compliments of Jerry Solowan (Solowan Sound)
who donated his time and equipment.
The day ended shortly before 7pm and was a huge success with
100 percent of all monies, over $7,200.00, being given to The
Hospice Society.
Attached are some of the head shaving photos.
