What Legions Do

Health

Legionaries are concerned about the quality of medical care seniors receive. To meet the need for professionals with specialized training in Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, the Legion offers financial support. The opportunity to pursue post-graduate study with the financial assistance of a Legion Fellowship is available to:

  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists

Home Support

The Legion is dedicated to the principle of encouraging programs which promote the independence and dignity of older adults. Legion Branches sponsor:

  • Transportation
  • Vehicles for Disabled
  • Friendly Visiting
  • Footcare Clinics
  • Meals-on-Wheels
  • Telephone Assurance
  • Home Maintenance
  • Diners' Clubs

Housing

The Legion believes that seniors deserve decent and affordable accommodation. Although some of the projects are only available to veterans, most accommodations are available to all seniors. Many Legion Branches across Canada are involved in housing projects which meet the specific needs of their community, such as:

  • Homes for Seniors
  • Domiciliary Care
  • Accommodation for the Homeless Veteran
  • Apartments
  • Housing Units

Community Services

The Legion believes in the community spirit. Legion Branches in many Canadian towns and villages are the gathering places of the community. The scope of seniors' activities is endless:

  • Seniors' Club
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Information Lectures
  • Recreation
  • Health Programs
  • Special Events

BC Seniors Games 2007

The BC Seniors Games 2007 will be held in Nanaimo September 12th-15th. Notice for funding of the medals etc. have been sent to all branches and L.A's. the amount required for the Legion's donation is $15,000. This will be our 15th year of supporting this event. We are very proud of being part of this event for seniors throughout B.C. most of which are Legion members. All participants and organizers are most appreciative for the Legions' generosity. To many this is their annual outing, meeting old and new friends in addition to the comradeship and challenge. If you happen to be in the neighbourhood drop by and cheer these very active seniors on.
