BC
SENIORS GAMES 2006
The
2006 BC Seniors Games took place in Abbotsford on August
23rd – 26th.
There
were over 3000 seniors in town, as either participants
or observers. At the opening ceremonies touch runners
delivered the torch to the Minister of Community Services
the Honorable Ida Chong who the lit the big torch from
the hand-held torch and declared the Games open.
There
were 25 events taking place at venues scattered throughout
Abbotsford. It was a reunion for most of the athletes
as this is their chance once a year to meet up with
friends made at previous Games.
The
age groups range from 50 to 90+ and they all put in
the same effort to win. Les Leyland, at the age of 89,
won a gold medal for the 5,000 meter run; his two year
old great grandson Ethan joined him in the last 300
meters. Another outstanding competitor was Norma Spenser
of Burnaby; Norma is 92 years young and won a bronze
medal for snooker.
Everyone
had a good time. The Branches and Ladies Auxiliaries
of BC/Yukon Command fundraised for the medals once again,
this being the 14th year. The athletes and the organizers
hold the Legion in high esteem and treasure their partnership
with the Games.
The
2006 participants wish to thank all involved from the
bottom of their hearts without them there would be many
seniors who would not be able to get away once a year
to this memorable event. Because the seniors are in
such good shape as a result of their training - it also
keeps them in good health.
