October 2006: Please check regularly to see the latest from your Sports Committee.

SPORTS COMMITTEE REPORT

Once again I’d like to ask the Zone Commanders to check their packages and to make sure that they have the “Notice of Intent to Participate in Command Sports Events, 2007”. This form must be completed and forwarded to Command no later than December 31, 2006 with the appropriate funds for each Sport. Regular and Seniors Curling, Darts and Cribbage fees are $200.00 per event. The Euchre fee is $100.00. Slo-pitch teams send their entry fee directly to the Host Branch.

Zone Commanders are reminded that it is their responsibility that the “Letter of Commitment” is filled in and signed by each participant, the registration forms for each sport completed and both forms are returned to BC/Yukon Command by the deadline.

Your Committee would like to thank the Branches that hosted the 2006 play downs:

Regular Curling Merritt Branch #96
Seniors’ Curling Golden Branch #122
Darts Langley Branch #21
Cribbage Aldergrove Branch #265
Euchre Agassiz Branch #32

Unfortunately Slo-pitch had to be cancelled because of the lack of participants (only one team sent their entry fee). Hopefully 2007 will produce more teams when the championships are held at the Esquimalt Branch #172. We would like all Zone Commanders to encourage their Branches to put together a mixed Slo-pitch team for next year – especially the Island Zones.

Your Committee would like to thank Cloverdale Branch #6 for doing an excellent job of hosting the 2006 Dominion Regular and Senior Curling Championships. All of the curlers from across our great country had nothing but praise for the Branch and the L.A.C. Committee.

We would also like to congratulate the Salmon Arm Branch #62 Regular Curling Team on winning the Dominion Championship. Skip: Duane Long, Third: Gord Duplisse, Second: Cliff Davies and Lead: Dennis Robertson.

The BC/Yukon Sports Committee supported the golf tournament in Vernon by supplying individual trophies. The next golf tournament is going to be hosted by the Cariboo Branch #94, in Quesnel on August 4th and 5th, 2007.

Fraser Valley Zone Commander, Walter Poustie, informed the Sports Committee that the Dominion National Track and Field Championships at Simon Fraser University was a great success.

After consulting with numerous Branch dart players your Sports Committee has decided to reduce the number of games in the Darts Play Downs from three to two sets. Section 612 of the Dominion Sports Guide states that a “Set” will consist of “three games” and one point will be awarded for each game won. This was almost impossible to achieve, as we usually have 17 to 18 Zones competing and too many games were being played each day. This change is effective for the 2007 BC/Yukon Command Play Downs.

In closing, I would like to thank Elke, Linda and all of the office staff for their assistance throughout the year.

Respectfully submitted:

R. J. Brady, Chair
W. Poustie
E. Fraser
M. Cook
B. Higdon
D. Hadley
