The British Commonwealth Ex-Services
League and The Royal Canadian Legion
The Royal Canadian Legion (RCL)
is one of 54 veterans or ex-service organizations from 46 countries
around the world that form the Commonwealth Ex-Services League (CEL).
Together with The Royal British
Legion (RBL), The South African Legion (SAL) and the Returned and
Services League of Australia (RSLA), The RCL is a major player in
assisting veterans of Commonwealth War Services in the less fortunate
countries that are, or once were, members of the commonwealth.
For many ex-service people,
especially World War II veterans, who served the Crown in now independent
countries, the benefits of service have disappeared as new governments
see no obligation to assist them. In others, the economic situation
is such that little or nothing can be done without outside assistance.
The RCL helps by supporting
CEL programs and shouldering special responsibility for veterans in
the 15 Caribbean member nations. Donations from RCL branches are used
to supplement CEL assistance where warranted or as stand alone grants
where needed.
It only takes small amounts
of money to meet members' needs in some cases, but there are many
needs, especially as the veterans grow older. Some examples:
-
$200 can send a veteran's
child to school;
-
$5000 can re-build a house
for an amputee;
-
$2000 can help buy a vehicle
for a veteran's hospital; and
-
$400 a year can raise a
veteran's family from abject poverty to relative comfort.
Many CEL member organizations
only need assistance to keep their own charitable works viable. With
our help they can help themselves.
The CEL organization, with The
Royal Canadian Legion, is dedicated to help those who served.
